Please also carefully read the "Island Transfers" Info as shown in the “Directions to get there” website info section (on the Right>>) as we need to make sure you fully understrand "How and When" to get to and from the island correctly....!!

Our staff at Central Reservations (Inhacazul Lodge) WILL HELP YOU with these transfer arrangements as you must be aware of the correct times and options etc available of the island transfers.

Inhacazul Accommodation:

Inhacazul Lodge guest Accommodation is very limited (and hence private) as we can only accommodate up to a maximum of 56 guests at any one time, and hiring the accommodation units are booked out on a “daily-hired” basis, and guests reside in “self-catering” residence units - which comprise of either; four large “8 sleeper” Chalets or four “4+2 sleeper” Timber Cabin style guest units..

Unfortunately we do not provide “room” or “bed” type of accommodation only (like a Hotel) – unless we are very quite or sometimes during Midweek in our “off-season” periods – its best to check with our Central Reservations office in Durban first..!

We do however provide a “couple-sharing” accommodation option on request if we are not to busy. The island and lodge is also a safe location for children of all ages.

Therefore, Guests can chose to book accommodation based on the mix of your party, in either a larger Chalet unit or a smaller Timber Cabin unit on a daily-basis for as many days/nights as you wish to stay on the island. (Please carefully review the guest unit room “layout plans” and sleeping/bed arrangements that can be reviewed on the left-hand-side of this web-page, [below the pictures] prior to booking a guest unit)… The 8 private guest units are designed mainly for “self-catering” visitors and are fully equipped and serviced daily.

December is the wettest month, while August is usually completely dry - Average daily temperatures are around 30C (85F) and it's fairly humid. While August to October are the windy months on the island.

Inhaca Eco-Tourism:

Inhaca Island is popular as an eco-tourism destination. The island habitat consists of central cultivated fields, grassy northern plains and eastern usnea-covered dune forests. Extensive exposed mudflats fringe the western and southern shores at low tide. Three largely undamaged coral reefs flank the island's western perimeters, all of which are protected marine reserves. Mangroves cover large sections of the northern shores and southern Saco Bay.

Among 160 coral species are Staghorn and Plate corals. Conspicuous fish are Moray eel, Potato bass, Barracuda and Kingfish. Others present are Brindle bass, Scorpionfish, Butterflyfish, Pufferfish, Parrotfish and Seahorses. Whale sharks and Manta rays visit in summer.

Humpback Whales and Bottlenose dolphins migrate seasonally past these shores. Sea turtles of different species visit the shores in summer to breed.

Inhaca is home to ca 300 bird species, resident and migratory, bird species of conservation concern are Pink-backed Pelican, Lesser Crested Tern, Crab Plover, Greater Sand Plover, Mongolian Plover, Terek Sandpiper, Southern Banded Snake Eagle, Mangrove Kingfisher, Grey-rumped Swallow and Spotted Ground-Thrush.
The southerly Nhaquene Swamp and Saco Bay are strongholds of the rare Sooty Falcon. Northerly Portuguese Island is a roost for several Tern species. Special birds of limited distribution are Rudd's Apalis, Neergaard's Sunbird and Pink-throated Twinspot.

News and Travel Updates..

Island Travel-Transfers Info -

The "Express" ferry no longer operators to and from the island during midweek - The ferry now runs only on a Saturady and Sunday ONLY... - Until further Notice.

The old Government Ferry still operates during the week, on: Tues, Thurs, Friday and Sat and Sunday's - but guest 's and Island day visitors have to make their own arrangements for that ferry on arrival at the harbour on the morning of departure. - Note: This ferry departs from Maputo to Inhaca at 7am..!

Please check with our Central Reservations Office for current and up to date island transfers information.

Directions to get here...

Welcome - To get to the lodge (which is located on Inhaca Island 34 km offshore from Maputo) you have two island transfer options – you can either catch a ferry ride across the bay in the morning or you can fly to the island in the afternoon. –

PLEASE NOTE: the island is a Nature Reserve (since 1976) so no vehicles are allowed on the Island – so you cannot drive too or take your vehicle (or Quad) onto the island via the ferry…!!

All guest vehicles can be safely parked either at the harbour (+/-R20 per day 24/7) if you catch a ferry, or safe parking is available at the Airport if you wish to fly to/from the island.

The best choice of these two options are often chosen by guests/visitors based on your time or method of arrival into Maputo or how you wish to travel to the island. –

PLEASE remember the nearest South African/Mozambique boarder post to Maputo located near Komatipoort in South Africa only opens at 06:00 am each day so unfortunately due to the distance from the boarder you will not be able to drive from the gate to the island ferry in time (07:30) to depart for Inhacazul Lodge the same morning…. Which is one reason guests chose to fly to the island in the afternoon (this will allow you to purchase food (for your “self-catering” requirements) or just sightsee in Maputo before you catch the afternoon island flight – and then maybe you can catch a return trip on the ferry..! – the only other option is to hire a “private” island charter which is fairly expensive.

Inhacazul Central Reservations Office in Durban can arrange these island transfers for you and add these ticket fare costs into your final lodge invoice (that will be sent to you after the deposit is paid), which allows you to make just one payment for both accommodation and island transfers… - simple.

To confirm these island transfer options, please contact our staff directly in the Inhacazul Lodge - Central Reservations Office in Durban.

Ferry Departure Times:

The old Government ferry operates only 5 days a week in the mornings on either; Tues / Thurs / Fri / Sat / Sun (Not Mon or Wed) and departs from Maputo Harbour in the morning only at 7.00am (high-tide time) and arrive on the island 3 hours later.

The ferry then departs from the island in the afternoon at approx 3.30 pm for the return trip back to Maputo the same day.

The price of a return trip is approx R100 per person.

Flight Departure Times:

The Inhaca island flights leave from Maputo International Airport 6 days a week at 3:30pm and take about 15 minutes to fly to the small island airstrip where they do a quick turn-a-around and fly back to Maputo the same day. (On Saturday only, the flight is in the morning at 8am)

These flights are 17 seater planes so you have to book early to make sure you get a seat.

The price of a return flight is approx $69 (R640) per seat (person) – (child fare under 2yrs is $25.00)

If you wish, you can book a single trip on either island transfer option, so a ferry trip out and a flight back can be arranged (or vis a visa) this way you get to experience two difference types of island travel adventure.

All of the above island transfer options can be arranged directly by and with our Inhacazul Lodge’s Central Reservations Office in Durban. (This is done after you have confirmed your trip and paid your accommodation deposit first).

If you have any other island transfer questions please just ask, - You can call or send an email to our Central Reservations Office.
